SIDS4 Conference side event | How maritime decarbonization can contribute to resilient blue-green economies in SIDS
SIDS4 Conference side event | How maritime decarbonization can contribute to resilient blue-green economies in SIDS
As island nations, SIDS are deeply reliant on the maritime sector to sustain their economies. At the same time, the maritime sector is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating the already significant climate crisis, which adversely impacts SIDS. Decarbonizing the maritime sector is critical to meet the global climate targets. While increased climate regulation for the shipping sector may entail higher costs across the value chain, it also has the potential to create new opportunities for developing countries including SIDS.
The objective of this side event is to discuss how we can ensure that the maritime transition is just and inclusive and contributes to building resilient blue-green economies in SIDS. The event will include insights on how the International Maritime Organization (IMO) provides support to SIDS, as well as share perspectives on the opportunities the transition presents in both the Caribbean and the Pacific regions respectively, acknowledging the different challenges these two regions face. The event will also spotlight the opportunities of green shipping corridors, and how they can contribute to a just and inclusive transition.
