On Demand Webinar | An Introduction to the Maritime Book & Claim System
An Introduction to the Maritime Book & Claim System
Watch webinar on demand here. Global warming is a climate emergency. The maritime industry is responsible for about 90% of world trade by volume and account for around 3% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions each year. With current decarbonization efforts, this is expected to grow to 5-8% of global emissions by 2050, as other sectors, such as road transport, are decarbonizing faster than maritime. All sectors, including the maritime industry, must take immediate collective action to reduce emissions in line with the Paris Agreement and the IPCC 1.5°C trajectory. Two key levers can be used to align the maritime industry to such trajectory: reducing the energy demand of the global fleet through onboard efficiency measures and replacing fossil fuels with low-emission alternative fuels – however, these measures are not exempt from challenges and the focus needs to shift towards the solutions that accelerate the transition. One of these solutions is a Maritime specific Book & Claim System. The Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, RMI, Danish Shipping, and Maersk Oil Trading have developed such a system with funding from the Danish Maritime Fund. During this webinar, we outlined how this system can become a trusted, global platform for exchanging and tracking maritime GHG emissions, accelerating decarbonization in the maritime industry.
