The shipping industry is falling behind the global race for sustainability.
Regulators are putting increasing pressure on the industry with new guidelines, for example, from CSRD or SFDR creating more and more complexity for shipping companies. Yet, only 46% of the largest companies have committed to ESG targets, such as net-zero emissions by 2050. Ignoring the green transition is not an option.
When companies prioritize sustainability, they enable new value creation and risk mitigations across various attributes of environmental, social and government (ESG). Even with this understanding, we found many shipping companies are faced with the question of how to get started.
Boston Consulting Group and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping co-created an ESG Playbook to enable accessibility and action within the shipping industry. The goal of the Playbook is to help companies instill ESG strategies within their organization. It provides recommendations on how to identify focus areas, set targets, and implement best practice initiatives, as well as upcoming regulations.
