Accelerating the adoption of energy efficiency technologies (EETs) across the shipping industry has been a central focus of this project.
Through collaboration with industry partners, real‑world pilot project cases have been conducted on operating vessels to test EETs under actual operational and commercial conditions.
Insights from these pilot projects highlighted a key challenge and opportunity: the need for an approach that shapes and reflects real operational realities while enabling fair and practical cost‑benefit sharing between ship owners and charterers.
As a result, the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping has developed a common framework for cost-benefit sharing. The framework provides a structured, practical, and user‑friendly approach to aligning incentives, clarifying responsibilities, and simplifying negotiations between parties.
By establishing clear principles for how costs and efficiency gains are shared, the framework supports more transparent, predictable, and scalable commercial arrangements. This is a critical step towards accelerating investments in energy efficiency and ultimately enabling wider adoption across the global fleet.
